Julius's Story

Life My life's journey has been an interesting one, to say the least, and has literally taken me to many places. The most important place has been the journey where I've come full-circle, literally and figuratively, and gained renewed perspective about a lot that has taken place in my life. This renewed and ever-evolving perspective has allowed me to truly view life and my current journey without blinders on. No one knows for sure where your journey will take you next, but somehow now, I feel more "prepared" to face whatever is in front of me with an open mind and heart. I pray the same will happen for everyone in their life. Of all of the unforseen places that my life's journey has taken me, I would have to say my brief stint in the entertainment industry would have to be the most surprising. During my 3 years of living back in Los Angeles as an adult, I was signed by an agency in Hollywood as a model and actor. I appeared in 1 episode of the show "Blind Date (2001)," and also was cast in a movie short entitled "Bananas (2003)." School My days in school growing up could best be described as ever-changing. From kindergarten through high school graduation, I went to 5 different schools in 3 different metropolitan city areas. My favorite memories were from my days of junior high (now called "middle school" in most parts of the country). It was the only school of the 5 that I actually started at and finished and didn't have to change schools during those years. It was truly the last time in my school career, with the exception of my brief stint in flight school, where we got genuine one-on-one attention and you were more than just a last name, grade level and/or a social security number (for those who went on to attend college, you know what I'm talking about). College I attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. My college days house some of my most fondest memories. I'm truly proud to say that I'm an alum of SIU. Our mascot is a saluki, which is a breed of Egyptian dog. Graduating from college was a significant accomplishment because it was a goal from my childhood, and became an expectation of mine (and of many others who knew me) as well. While there, I won the student-body softball homerun-hitting contest twice (Spring of '93 and...Expand for more
Summer of '94), with a second place finish in the Spring of '92, which was my first time in the contest. My power can best be described as tape-measuring, travels-into-next-week, car-denting, windshield-shattering devastation; so don't park too close to outfield fences while I'm up to bat:) One unsuspecting student had to learn that the hard way:) And as captain, I lead and was the mastermind that created "The FreakMasters," intramural basketball champions of 1994. Beside the many lifelong friends that I met there, the best thing I remembered about attending this University was the beautiful women that attended this school. Every semester, for all the ones that graduated or left for other reasons, we were replenished, seemingly 10-fold, with more from every race and background imaginable. This made walking around campus a joy and truly memorable!! Workplace I currently work over in the Middle East, where I have worked in the country of Iraq and now currently in Afghanistan as a Department of Defense civilian contractor for the US military. With this job, I am now part of evolving history in helping with the reconstruction and restoration of Iraq and Afghanistan. Additionally, I've finally achieved my childhood dream of attaining a job that allows me to travel the world to see and experience new places and cultures. Military I proudly and distinguishly served in the Illinois Air National Guard, which is a reserve unit of the U.S. Air Force. I was in the 264th Combat Communications Squadron, located at O'hare International Airport, Chicago, Illinois. I was a Satellite/Wideband/HF Radio Communications technician. In retrospect, this was probably one of the best decisions I ever made. I joined so the military could pay for me to go to college. The education that I got from serving with many talented people from so many different races, backgrounds and cultures was immeasurable in helping me to prepare for life in general. The many friends that I've made from that experience will always be considered part of my family because when you serve for years like that, and share in so many "highs" and "lows" both in your military and personal lives, you become family. I grew as a person exponential fold from my experience in the military, and for that, I am eternally grateful.
